A robbery suspect was shot and killed and an officer is injured after an officer-involved shooting Thursday evening on the city’s North Side.

The shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. on NW Loop 410 just before the McCullough Avenue exit.

San Antonio police Chief William McManus said a man in his 20s was trying to steal a bike at a Target in the area. Security tried to stop the man and called police.

The man fled on the bike from the Target up onto Loop 410. Officers in the area followed the man and tried to subdue him.

When officers attempted to subdue the man on Loop 410, he pulled out a knife and cut an officer, police said. An officer then pulled out his service weapon and shot the man in the abdomen, killing him.

The officer who was cut was taken to a nearby hospital.

McManus said the highway will be closed for a few hours while authorities comb through the scene.

The officer who fired his service weapon is a 15-year veteran. He'll be placed on administrative duty during the investigation.
