A transgender woman was shot twice during an attempted robbery by a man she met online when they met at a motel on the city's Northeast Side, police said.

The victim suffered at least two gunshot wounds to the leg and was transported with non-life-threatening injuries to San Antonio Military Medical Center.

When police responded for a call of a shooting just before 2 a.m. Thursday at the Travelodge Inn & Suites in the 2300 block of Loop 410, they found a TV ripped off the wall.

"Somewhere in that altercation, the suspect produced a firearm, firing multiple shots," said police spokesman Officer Carlos Ortiz.

Ortiz said the transgender woman met the man via the online dating service Plenty of Fish.

"One can only speculate if you agreed to meet somebody on a social app at about one, two in the morning," Ortiz said.

The gunman showed up with another man, who tried to rob the woman, Ortiz said.

The pair fled the scene in a black pickup truck.

The victim wasn't very cooperative with police, Ortiz said.

The case will be turned over to the district attorney's office to decide if the incident will be labeled as a hate crime, Ortiz said.
